Book Covers

We all can admit that at one point or another we have choose a book by its cover. As an author and poet who self publishes, I understand the importance of how the cover works to draw an audience in. Below are some tips and interviews with authors. Some has self published and some are with publishers. Each one of these are extremely talented writers and you can find all of their books on Amazon.

Author Elle Klass is a teacher, mother, and grandmother who has written several books and who is achieving her dreams as an author. Elle writes stories that capture and draw her audience in. Such as, her “Baby Girl Series” and the Eye of the storm which are two different genres, “Baby Girl” is an unique story of a young girl facing her past and finding the real her. “Eye of the Storm” is a paranormal story about a young woman who’s curiosity open doors that lead to frightening events. Elle’s stories are great reads but her covers intrigued me. The covers always left me feeling as if I was dwelling inside of a mysterious compound in search of something.

Please welcome my interview with Author Elle Klass

1. Tell me a little about yourself and the book you have chosen to discuss about its cover.

My name is Elle Klass. I write and read a variety of genres. I have published 3 novels and 4 short stories. The book I’m choosing to discuss is my new release Baby Girl Box Set.

2. Did you create your own cover or did you have a cover artist do the cover?

A very talented author/graphic designer created the cover. In fact she created the covers for all the short stories that make up the box set.

3. Of course, to give credit where credit is due, who was the cover artist?

Author Manuela Cardiga.

4. What role did your publisher or you play in creating the cover?

Hmm… I am my own publisher so everything. I gave Manuela a description and we talked about what type of mood and thoughts I wanted portrayed on the cover. We were on the same page and had very similar ideas in mind. She created the amazing cover. The girl on the cover is an exclusive original created just for the Baby Girl Books. She did an amazing job. I LOVE THE COVERS!

5. Why do you think the cover images and book blurb or author info is so important when putting your book up for sale?

Covers are the first thing we see when looking for a book so the cover needs to be appealing and mood setting. A boring blurb won’t catch too many people’s attention yet the blurb should reflect the story and make it enticing. The author info is important because it tells the reader a bit about the author and helps the reader relate or connect with the author.

7.  What type of images, fonts and colors did you use and why did you choose them?

Baby Girl Box Set cover was created to provoke a certain emotion. We wanted the girl on the cover to look forlorn. Cleo is abandoned by her mom when she’s only twelve years old. Alone, Cleo leaves her home and starts her own life as a street kid. She rummages, hides, steals, dumpster dives and anything else she has to do to survive.

8. Tell me why you think your cover fits in with your genre

If you look at all the book covers in the series she aged the image to reflect Cleo’s age during each book. The covers are attractive and appealing to the age group they are written for and above. I get tons of compliments on them of course I take absolutely no credit.

9. If you could change anything about your cover to fit the book better what would it be and why?

I wouldn’t change anything. I think the cover is absolutely perfect.

My next author, Author Haley Hatch Freeman, is a young mother that has a strong message she portrays in her writing. That message is about self-worth, raising self-esteem and accepting our own self-beauty. Her audience is written for young girls and boys but also for any adult. Haley has facesd her own demons of anexoria, her book “A Future for Tomorrow” tells her story of survival. She is now a public speaker on eating disorders for young children and adults. She has released a children’s book call “From Head to Tummy.” Haley’s covers always made me feel at peace and gave me a feeling of inner strength.

Please welcome my interview with Author Haley Hatch Freeman

1. Tell me a little about yourself and the book you have chosen to discuss about its cover.

I’m going to discuss the cover of my second edition of A Future for Tomorrow: Surviving Anorexia, My Spiritual Journey. It tells about my remarkable story of overcoming anorexia, having a near death experience and other miracles along the way.

2. Did you create your own cover or did you have a cover artist do the cover?

I did my own cover with help from some very talented people.

3. Of course, to give credit where credit is due, who was the cover artist?

I came up with the creative idea of how I wanted my cover to look. I had my brother, Jason Hatch, draw the girl on the journal, he is a talented artist and it turned out better than I could have imagined. I had a photographer, Mari Farr, (who was also a friend – it’s great to have connections) take the photos. Then myself and another remarkable friend of mine, Megan Svetz, who just happened to be very talented with graphic design work helped pull it all together into a cover.

4. Why do you think the cover images and book blurb or author info is so important when putting your book up for sale?

The cover has to draw the reader in and pique their curiosity, but also tell the reader what the book is about within seconds. With so many books on the market if your book’s cover looks unprofessional the customer will assumed the quality of the writing is also low and they will move on. It has to look intriguing and of high quality.

5. What role does your cover play to your audience?

My cover tells a story and has meaning. The journal in the photo is my actual journal, with an actual journal entry showing and the picture I had my brother draw depicts the story of anorexia. Also, I wanted pink roses on it because they are symbolic of my sister who died and is a huge part of my near death story. My book details more about why there is a connection with pink roses and my sister.

6. What type of images, fonts and colors did you use and why did you choose them?

With my first edition, I choose colors that I love and that I think look great together and are appealing. I used predominantly dark hunter green with the contrast of pink roses. I loved it but for the second edition of A Future for Tomorrow I wanted something lighter, something more heavenly since it is a near death experience book and a story ultimately of love and hope, so I went with white.

7. If you could change anything about your cover to fit the book better what would it be and why?

That’s what is great about having a second edition, the things I would have changed in the first edition I did in the second, so I really love this cover!

My next author, Author Krysten Lindsay Hager, is an amazing writer for young adults. Her books take me back to my high school years with memories of friends, the drama and the whole scene of being young. Her covers are amazing too, I really love the color palette and the font is eye catching.

Please welcome my interview with Author Krysten Lindsay Hager.

1. Tell me a little about yourself and the book you have chosen to discuss about its cover.

I write the Landry’s True Colors Series, a Clean Reads young adult series about friendship, self-esteem, fitting in, middle school and high school, frenemies, modeling, crushes, values, and self-image. The book cover I’m going to discuss with you today is, Best Friends…Forever? It is the second book in the series, however the books can also be read as standalone novels. Best Friends…Forever? was ranked at #1 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases in Children’s Books on Values and #1 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases in Teen & Young Adult Values & Virtues Fiction. The first book, True Colors, is an international bestselling book. I have a new book, a standalone young adult novel, Next Door to a Star, that will be released on September 1st from Limitless Press.

2. Did you create your own cover or did you have a cover artist do the cover?

The publisher, Clean Reads, assigned a cover artist. I had worked with the cover artist (Cora Graphics) on the first book in the series, True Colors, and I had some suggestions for her. I wanted to use the same model for Landry (the main character) and I wanted to see her friends, Ashanti and Peyton on the cover, too. For a while it was going to be just Vladi ( the crush/boyfriend) and Landry, but I am so glad the two other girls are on there as well. The previous title dealt with Landry trying to fit in and “find her tribe” so to speak, whereas this book had her dealing with true friends and how hard it is to deal with when there is any sort of drama between you and a best friend. I have to say I also love the backdrop of the book with the school.

3. Of course, to give credit where credit is due, who was the cover artist?

Cora Graphics did both covers in the Landry’s True Colors Series.

4. What role did your publisher or you play in creating the cover?

The cover artists and I emailed back and forth about the story and I was so glad we were able to keep the same “Landry” as the cover model. I wanted Peyton and Ashanti on the cover since this time the friend drama in the book is more about the painful, lonely loss you feel when you fight with real friends as opposed to frenemy types. We had the cover be in a similar vein as the first one.

5. Why do you think the cover images and book blurb or author info is so important when putting your book up for sale?

People still do judge a book by its cover.

6. What role does your cover play to your audience?

I think it shows the character is dealing with some inner conflict and feeling separated from the group, which so many teens deal with on a daily basis, while the colors keep it light which showcases the fun side of the novels.

7. What type of images, fonts and colors did you use and why did you choose them?

I had asked for the best friend bracelet charm to be on the first book in the series (True Colors) and it appears on the lettering. I also mentioned to the cover artist how the True Colors phrase in both the first book title and the series name had more than one meaning as it refers to seeing a friend’s true colors, but I also had another purpose in using it. You see, Landry is insecure and she often compares what she has to what other people have and thinks whatever they have/possess is better. For examples, in the case of her hair and eye color, she wants to look like her friend Devon with the curly dark hair and dark brown eyes or with Peyton’s dark red hair. With that in mind, Landry often picks thing (makeup, etc.) that match what the other girls use, whereas her true friends appreciate Landry’s unique beauty—like when Thalia picks makeup for her that matches Landry’s skin tone or when Peyton and Ashanti pick colors that flatter her instead of Landry just following the crowd and going along with what everyone else is wearing. Landry thinks her light blonde hair isn’t attractive because a frenemy refers to it in a negative light. It just shows us how hard we can be on ourselves and we can easily miss the positive side. So the rainbow font really shows the role color plays.
The font has a romantic and sweet feel to it, which I think shows that there is a crush developing into a first boyfriend type relationship, which shows she’s growing up. Although Landry and Vladi are teens, they’re very innocent and sweet, so it’s more like one of those couples that is like a Nancy Drew and Ned type as opposed to those Bella and Edward type couples. I think the font showcases that.
8. Tell me why you think your cover fits in with your genre
The font reminds me of young adult romances—in particular sweet romances where there is nothing the slightest bit explicit, just that hint of first love and those hopeful feelings that come with a first crush. I think the colors are youthful and fun as in the sky backdrop as well.

9. If you could change anything about your cover to fit the book better what would it be and why?

It would be nice if there was a way to convey the humor in the novel.
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions and do I have your permission to post your cover, blurb and author info? Yes! Anything you need, just ask.

Best Friends…Forever? (Landry’s True Colors Series) by Krysten Lindsay Hager
I have always loved reading books that use humor and have realistic (and relatable) characters. I decided to write the book I wanted to read when I was in middle school and I’m overjoyed it’s now a series where people can follow along on Landry’s journey through dealing with friendships, the ups and downs of school, crushes, and insecurities. Sure, going back to that time in my own life was a little crazy, but lucky for me there weren’t camera phones to capture me dancing in the grade school talent show…while wearing jean shorts. If you’re not cringing yet, let’s just say I also had a moment of “genius” where I thought my super dark brown hair would look amazing with “Sun-In” highlights that actually turned my hair a lovely shade of copper. Sigh.
The Landry’s True Colors Series is a clean reads young adult/middle grade series about friendship, self-esteem, fitting in, middle school and high school, frenemies, modeling, crushes, values, and self-image. Best Friends…Forever? was ranked at #1 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases in Children’s Books on Values and #1 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases in Teen & Young Adult Values & Virtues Fiction. True Colors is an international bestselling book. Her new book, Next Door to a Star, will be released on September 1st.
Tag line: Good friends have your back, but some go behind it.
Blurb: Landry Albright hopes the new year will start off in an amazing way—instead she has to deal with more frenemy issues, boy drama, and having most of her best friends make the cheerleading squad without her. Suddenly, it seems like all anyone can talk about is starting high school next year—something she finds terrifying.

Landry gets her first boyfriend, but then gets dumped just as things come to a head with her friends. She feels lost and left out, but finds good advice about dealing with frenemies from what she considers an unlikely source. Landry faces having to speak up for what’s right, tell the truth (even when it hurts), and how to get past the fear of failure as she gets another shot at competing in the American Ingénue modeling competition. Will Landry get a second chance with her friends, fame, and Vladi?

What people are saying about True Colors (Landry’s True Colors Series Book One):

From Teenage Book Recommendations in the UK: “This is a fantastically relatable and real book which I feel captures all of the insecurities and troubles which haunt the modern teenage girl. It is about a young model who has to go through tough times when she is torn between a life as a model and managing her friendships. You learn which friends she can most trust and which will create the drama typical of teenage life.
Follow the life of Landry and try to see if you can find out which are her true friends before their true colours are revealed. This book is all about relationships, hopes and truth. I loved this book!”

From Books & Authors Spot: “This book is such an inspiration for those who just care about their looks and are tensed about them. This thing is looks aren’t everything. This book is related to every teen’s problem. Hager has written a very inspiring novel.”

Tips and Tricks for publishing book covers

1. Hire an cover artists, the web is full of them and their work is excellent.

2. Cannot afford to hire a book artist, the platform I recommend for self-publishers is the  one built into Createspace. However I do suggest to study other authors that self-create their own covers within your genre.

3. Decide on a message….your message will capture your audience. The cover must fit the message within the words of your book, it it doesn’t, it will turn people away.

4. Think of visual metaphors when thinking about your message. Such as, does your book portray the following suggested feelings and emotions: Inspiration and Aspiration, Success, Knowledge and Power, Romance and Passion or Murder and Revenge.

5. This helps with determing the imagery, font , colors and layout. Your titele must generate excitement – Do not over think!
